what makes a fertile egg? I've been reading some of the threads in the other section, on incubators etc. And a couple of other sites.

Please remember i'm new to chickens..
I know they sell fetile eggs on ebay.. so that makes me assumer you need a cockerel... and he 'helps' the hen make a fertile egg...

But a site i was reading said a fertile egg is an egg kept at a certain (warm) temp.

Now i know that if an egg isn't 'sat on' to be kept warm it dies.

But if you don't have a cockerel and put an egg in an incubator would it grow?  :?

So if you don't have a cockerel and have a broody hen who sits on her eggs.. will she get chicks? or is she being daft?

See.. told you i was new! lol and need to learn more!

to grow a baby chick in an egg.

a cockerel needs to have been playing piggy backs with the hens.

same ingredients as a human egg to grow into a baby.... if you get what i mean

Yes it would. The cock fertilises by doin IT with the hen and then her eggies are fertilised  So whether under broody or in incy the eggies hopefully hatch
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

oh by the way, you can collect eggies for up to a week and then put them in the incy or under broody, they start to develop as soon as the get warm

So thats why you can buy them off ebay then - thought maybe they keep them warm in the post... like tropical fish :) are packaged with heat packs.

And Rob.. you need to read up on the birds and the bee's.. they've got a good website now! ;)
