I wonder if anyone can give me some advice on this? I recently filled in a fairly large hole in my back garden with a mixture of compost, general soil and sharp sand.

the mixture seems to be fairly quick draining and is very soft (I can step on it and sink a good few inches). I want to sow some lavender plants in it but I am worried that the soil will not retain enough moisture.

Any suggestions on whether I need to do anything to this? I have some surrounding soil which is high in clay so I was thinking about adding some of this??

That actually sounds about perfect for lavender. They like hot, dry weather & are tolerant of drought.

We've visited the lavender farm on Jersey a couple of times. The lavender there is growing practically in sand.

you could dig in some clay granules, or if you have money to burn, perlite............or see my thread on Cat Litter..........
