What is khol-rabi?
« on: May 23, 2008, 07:58 »
I had some of these seeds delivered to me with a load of other seeds. I did not order them, free gift from seller.
I have put them in a tray in the greenhouse and there seems to be quite a few coming through.
Just wondered what they are and how to deal with them as I will be putting them in the allotment as soon as they big enough to transplant.

I have to ask..... did it not say on the packet?

They are a root forming brassica, the recommended way of growing is to sow straight in the ground & then thin out to about 6" apart.

I've never tried transplanting them, so don't know who it will work out. Hopefully someone who as will be along!

Piccie of one variety, they come in all colours including purple!...

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It says "khol-rabi staying purple" on the packet.
To be honest I start 90% of my veg in the greenhouse and then transplant with 99% success. This is just the way I have done it since I started and rarely drop seeds straight into the ground.
May not be correct way but it works for me.

they don't taste anything like cabbage. It's the swollen stalk you eat, which are rather like spicy, peppery radish or turnip, or broccoli stalk for that matter, for salads or used as any root in cooking. The leaves are also brilliant.

I do transplant them, but only do this with larger varieties, grow the small ones just  like radish.

Protect as per brassica.

Agree with gobs on taste, we love them, fresh from the ground they are really juicy, great in salads. I have never cooked them as they get eaten before they reach the hot water. Khol rabi simply translates to cabbage turnip, its grown by the ton in east europe and is one of their staple veges

Which part of it do you eat - the ball part, the stalks/leaves or all of it?  :?

Among the several 'unusual' vegetables that I have so far tried, it is the one which I positively like.
