Chick Killed!!!
« on: May 18, 2008, 16:58 »
I just dont understand chickens. I am 2 days from chicks hatching and i found one of my broodys eggs broken open, chick killed and shell not to be found anywhere. What is all that about!!! I really dont know what to do with the 1 remaining fertile egg under her. She is in the main shed with the other chooks ? it was one of them?
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

recently had a hen sitting on 9 eggs and a few days before hatching 3 were broken and eaten. I have heard theories that the mother can tell which are duds - there was a very immature chick left but the shells of the three eggs were virtually all eaten. When she hatched the remaining eggs she ate the shells. I don't think it was one of the other hens. I suspect that the shells are reduced in thickness during the course of the incubation, this would partly be to supply the develping chick with calcium for bones and has the advantage of making escape from the shell easier, but it would however increase the risk of accidental breakage. I would not risk moving the bird before hatching at this late stage.
How are your JA757's doing?
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

The JA757's are donig well, putting on an alarming amount of weight and feathering up well. I have one with a slow crop that is half the size of the others - not sure if will make table size but will see how it goes.
