In need of a Marrow doctor
« on: May 12, 2008, 17:58 »
Hi all,

Quick question on marrows. My plants are coming on nicely with loads of buds on them, but on closer inspection one of them has split it's stem (see photie).

Has anyone got any idea what may have caused this? And how do I deal with it, or don't I?

It's a shame as it's the largest of the 5 plants i've got :(

I'd think it's due to extreme variation in water levels, as in fruit, etc.

Take it easy, can manage itself, but as it's at the very base, might be further trouble.

Marrows and winter squashes have bigger root systems than courgettes, once planted out and soaked in, only need watering if sulking 'cos of serious draught or at fruit swelling, maybe, just maybe.

Sorry, been away for a couple of days without internet access. (It was like being in the stone age!!)

Thanks for that gobs. It could very well be what you say as it is currently in a big pot in the greenhouse. It sits on a shelf underneath loads of seedlings so it gets other plants water as well as it's own!!! I also reckon I may have been over watering it :(  It's so easy to do when your a beginner.

Anyway, it's been moved and will shortly be planted out. In the meantime I have supported the stem with a stone wrapped in bubble wrap :D

Thanks again
