Gas or Charcoal?
« on: May 08, 2008, 10:00 »
I've been using gas for 3 years after being a stuanch charcoal man
Thinking about switching back :?
Gas lacks flavour
And can't give enough heat :(

What do you think?

I'd never use gas on environmental grounds, also it rather defeats the object using gas you might as well cook it in the oven IMO

I found exactly the same. I think the only benefit with gas is its convenience. ( you know, nice evening = spontaneous BBQ ) but you can't beat the flavour of charcoal.
I'm planning to give the gas BBQ one last go, but using some of those damp woodchips you can add in - and if it doesn't live up to expectations...its gubbins will get taken out and converted to charcoal.

Gas for me - I inherited the  BBQ when my Dad died and as I retail LPG it costs me nothing so it's really cheap(as in costs nothing) but I must admit charcoal does taste better.  Hang on a minute, I retail charcoal so that would cost me nothing either :D

I think I have turned into a wuss - I struggle to light a bonfire up the lottie now.
Maybe I should watch more Ray Mears or Bear Grylls and then I could light a fire on the side of a mountain whilst building a boat out of a stick and a pile of leaves

We have a gas bbq- last summer we used it every night (we had no kitchen for over 6 weeks) I roasted the veg in foil dishes- lovely- bad for the hips though :( !  I did notice Lidl had bbqs  there this week, maybe I should have a look on Monday to see if there are any left.

Most of the fun is in the cooking and keeping the coals nicely red...  I agree that if you are cooking gas... you might just as well cook indoors and eat alfresco....  CHARCOAL or old fashioned WOOD!

Def charcoal. First tasted food ona gas over in Canada before we had them, after two weeks of them trying their best to convert me I was glad to get home and light the charcoal just to smell the wood.

Here is mine (again)

Its now finished off, this was just after building it.
