Strawberries - protection
« on: May 08, 2008, 09:12 »
Someone has donated some flowering strawberry plants to me, with very little advice.

Can I plant them out or do I need to wait until risk of frosts has past?

Do I need to protect from slugs and birds?

We've planted ours out. We'd bought them from Aldi in February and they were needing to go out. We have had 6 plants in since last year and they have survived the snow and frosts and maintained their green leaves.
When they start to fruit you will need to protect them from the birds otherwise it is a race as to who gets them first. We put net over ours (I know some people don't like this) and we put straw around the plants so that the fruit isn't on the ground.  :)

As Matron says, they are perfectly hardy perennials. Plant them out asap, or you need to water them, already might do  .

Also need protection from slugs a great time.
