Heavy pecking
« on: May 07, 2008, 10:45 »
Hi all,
New to the poultry keeping, wondered if you can give me some advice with a chick problem.
Brought some 1 and 2 week old marans and light Sussex chicks last week to go on the allotment, over the last couple of days it seems like tail feathers are starting to develop on the light sussex chicks which is causing some redness. The other chicks are starting to peck at this and the birds are starting to bleed. I have put those birds in separate boxes to stop the problem getting worse.
The chicks are in a fair size brooder, they have plenty of water and feed, they are on wood shavings  and some straw, I’ve hung up some cabbages to help with boredom.
I’ve just read about this purple spray would that help?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Spray the affected areas with a purple spray. The colour red seems to give the green light to feather pecking, so a drop of blood from a damaged quill sets them off.
