Poultry Suppliers Nottinghamshire
« on: May 02, 2008, 20:25 »
Hi Folks,

I am really interested in getting a few more chickens and quite fancy Silkies, Polish Frizzles and Silver Laced Wyandottes. Does any one know of any breeders/suppliers in or around the Nottinghamshire area? I've checked the poultry pages and can't find anyone local enough. Also, has anyone any experience of keeping a small flock of mixed breed chickens? Are they any more likely not to get along with each other than chickens of the same breed? Does anyone know if any of the breeds I'm interested in  are generally more aggressive/less likely to socialise than the hybrids I have at the moment.  I would ensure that they are socialised and introduced to my current chickens in the correct manner.

Also if anyone knows of any poultry markets around Nottinghamshire, I'd be most grateful to know the dates, times and venues.

Many thanks

Mambo

hi Mambo,

Which bit of Notts are you in?  If you're more north than south it might be worth a visit to Graves Park Rare Breeds Centre, on the very south edge of Sheffield - they have Silkies, Polands and Wyandottes (though I'd recommend ringing them first to see what's available and when).

Nice people too - if you're interested their number is 0114 258 2452 and talk to Pete - he really knows his stuff.

And - probably too far up for you, but maybe worth a look at their website - I hear good things about Storrs Poultry  www.storrspoultry.co.uk.  Going there tomorrow for a bit of Bank Holiday shopping!

I'm definitely no expert on flock keeping (though I've learned a lot more than I expected in the last few weeks!) but for what it's worth I've got three different birds - 1 x Warren hybrid, 1 x Black Rock hybrid and 1 x Welsummer, plus until this morning 1 x Laced Wyandotte ( ) - and they've all been perfectly happy together.

Good luck!
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Thanks Peggy,

South of Sheffield is not too far from us, I'll certainly give Graves Park a call.

Best
