Strawberries
« on: May 01, 2008, 12:33 »
I am growing Strawberries from little seedlings in my utility room as this room gets the sun most of the day.

They are coming on brilliant, but wanted to know what to do next.

When can I plant them outside, if at all.

Will I get Strawberries this year.

If planting outside, shall I cover with plastic, like a little mini greenhouse.

Thanks

I'd harden them off, suggest outside during the day for a week, inside at night.

Then leave them in the pots outside for a week all the time. Then into the ground! They will be fine uncovered.

You may get strawberries this year, but one school of thought says you shouldn't let them fruit, so that the energy goes into developing the plant.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just pick off any flowers that appear - those are the fruiting flowers. By next year you'll have big hardy plants that will produce loads of flowers and fruit.

Thanks

Over the autumn/winter, should I cover them to stop frost.

Do you think they will be okay in a tub.

Wouldn't bother. They're incredibly hardy. Even hard frost rarely kills the flowers.
