Planting tomatoes in pots
« on: April 24, 2008, 17:03 »
:D Hi there, I am a new lottie holder and dug up half may (small) garden to try and produce some goodies later on in the year. I have tomato plants desperate to be planted (about a foot high) in the greenhouse so I thought I would plant them in fairly bit pots and leave them in the greenhouse until the frost has gone.  I have in the past used grow bags but I was wondering if it would be ok to use well rotted compost and water retaining gel, or is the point of a grow bag that it is sterlized and am I more like to give me little darlings a terminal disease :?:  :?:

Confused

toms are heavy feeders and like rich compost such as growbag. I grow toms in containers (about 9 to 12 inch) and fill them with growbag compost. I always use fresh stuff. I think old compost would have no nutrients in it.  You could use compost mixed with well rotted cow or hoss manure if you have it

Firstly welcome to the forums.

Outside wise - I plant mine straight in the ground and let them get on with it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you want put them in big pots I'd usecompost from growbags, this contains a certain amount of 'fuel' to help them reach a certain size and produce flowers. Start feeding when they start flowering
You can always sink the posts into the ground outside once the threat of frost has passed. Harden them off by bringing them outside during warm(er) days, like today.

Good luck

:D  :D  Thanks for the welcome, and I thought you might say that.  I think it might be best to spend a bit of money on the grow bags - I would hate to give them a bad start.  I have loads to do, so may do a trial.  Half and half - let you know how I get on.

Anyone found a good price for growbags or is it a bit early yet?
Wyevale is my nearest garden centre.  There are not too expensive usually.

Not been there yet, but I usually go for J. Arthur Bowers 'Instant Planters' They're bigger than a standard growbag, are reduced peat & have added nutrients & water retaining granules.

I don't use them as growbags though, I empty them out & use them for potting ujp, including the tomatoes.

Hi, Sassy! :D

I never use grow bags. :D Toms grow well in pots- just about the only veg I do in pots- in any rich compost, the feed they need for good flouring, mostly potash, also contains everything else they need.

You might want to take a look in No frills, if you have a store nearbye(part of the Focus diy chain), they sell growbags for 79 pence, not sure if Focus sell them at this price as well. :)
