Hi there,

Just like to say a big 'Hello' to everyone on this site. I've been reading the posts regularly since becoming a new allotmenteer last month and picked up some good advice and tips.

I would just like to ask a basic question. We've dug a couple of trenches and I've been stacking the grass sods (the majority of it Crouch Grass I think) at the side of the trenches, waiting to move them to one place when I get some pallets for composters. Now I've read that if you leave this soil it'll turn into Loam - do I need to cover the soil to ensure all the weeds/grass is fully dead or should I leave it open to the elements?

Any help/advice is much appreciated.

Cover then up with carpet or tarp to keep the light out otherwise they will just start to grow again.

Hi there Arlene and welcome!

When I dug up our lawn I made a big stack of all the turfs. It was
not covered and grass grew around the edges which I just lopped
off with a sharp spade. I think it would be better to cover it and just
forget it for a year or so.

It made beautiful soil for potting and things.
