are these all weeds?
« on: April 21, 2008, 18:30 »
I have a bunch of things growing on my new plot and i'm not sure which are weeds or things I should keep. Or even just things i should know what they are to help me plan what to plant in that space or not.

Can you help with the following please?

i think this ones mares tail :( :(

I didn't want to just dig it all up just in case there are hidden treasures :) I found a small wooden frame that's seperated into squares at the back that seems to be for herbs - there are chives and mint in it.

top pic is chives (those with the purple flower heads on), not sure about the second one, third one is raspberry I think, the one after that looks like a blueberry, dunno what the stripey thing is near the rose, sommat of the onion family, cranesbill or hardy geranium

I wouldn't say the top one is chives - too broad leaved. Poss a leek run to seed.

Second is speedwell - weed

Third - also think raspberry
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Could the first pic be garlic?
Pic 3 is a raspberry type of plant.
I've got pic 6 as an old onion.
pic 7 may be creeping buttercup but don't quote me on that one.

1 - Certainly some allium with grass, I wonder if it's an ornamental one, as I let onions flower and collect seed of leeks, etc, seem not to look like that, but I am shamefully not certain. Definitely no onion or chives - round leaves - and I doubt leeks a lot.

2 - speedwell

3 - might be raspberry leaves, but what are the thick cane things? Also some nuts will have similar leaves

4 - to the left some soft fruit shooting? in middle either celery or some buttercup, very end one might even be parsnip - very blur -, to the right some sorrel maybe with nettle in the background

5 - you mean horsetail, surely

6 - gone past it looking onion type with grass

7 - looks like some sort of buttercup or related weed

All in all, you might want to keep No1 and 3 for the minute and see what they turn out to be. All the rest should be history.

First pic is a flowering onion (ornamental). You can lift the bulbs and put them where more convenient. Unless you want loads more, suggest you cut off the flowerhead immediately after flowering. I have loads of those in my garden. Chives have slimmer leaves small flower heads.

2nd pic - speedwell - a weed in my garden

3rd pic  - raspberry but hard to tell if everbearing or summer

4th & 5th - don't know

6th  - an old onion, possibly second season for flowering and seeds

7th  -  don't know the name but it's a weed. Perennial geraniums don't sit so close to the ground. Have loads of both and the weed ones get the boot. Do dig out the large root well.

Thanks so much ! I will get rid of them all except 1 and possibly 3. I like flowering onions so I that counts as treasure :)

sorry I did mean horsetail. I was getting optimistic that no one had confirmed it but I guess it is :(

number 4 is a particularly bad shot - it's quite far off the ground so a bush or tree shoot. I'll try and get a better picture of it.

There's one i forgot to post -

That's some sort of soft fruit again, possibly raspberry and maybe honeysuckle next to and large duckweed needing attention behind.
