Manure!!! Lots of it.
« on: April 21, 2008, 12:51 »
Hi - we've just taken delivery of some free stable manure on our site (fairly well rotted) and I was wondering if I can use it now on beds where I'm going to grow "two sisters" (squash and sweetcorn) later on, from June.

I know you can dig in manure in autumn but is there anything else that would benefit from an application now? Fruit bushes for instance? I've given up on brassicas - wrong soil conditions etc. etc.

Thanks!! :?

It will be good for corn and beans, they'll love it. Blackbirds love to throw it about so I tend to try and turn mine in a little or just chuck some soil over it where the beans are or they hoik the beans out anorl  :D   It comes full of insects yer see so they're instantly routing about in it.  It's good for fruit bushes. It'll be good for your strawbs, courgettes, cucs, squashes etc, peas, broad beans, brassicas are heavy feeders so like muck.  The only thing you won't have to give muck are carrots and parsnips. I wouldn't bother giving it to salad stuff either

Oh toms wouldn't mind a drop once the trusses have formed

I would be careful with the muck and brassicas . A crop that has had it
before is good for them IE Beans.

Thanks C Q, that's given me lots of ideas. Thanks also for advice about digging in to thwart the blackbirds, pesky feathery bandits. Actually I'm a mad-keen birder but there are limits!
