Pruning a 1 year old apple tree
« on: April 20, 2008, 21:15 »
I planted a 1 year old unfeathered apple tree last autumn.(Fiesta). I have just read that i should have topped it after I planted it. Would it be ok to prune it now or should I let it grow this year and top it in the winter. Any advice would be appreiciated

Apples should be pruned in winter time, whilst dormant. But it is so young also you did not miss a thing, whatever shape you want it to be, I'd leave alone for now, myself.

Thanks gobs, was looking forward to getting some branches going, do you think that will still happen or will it just get taller?

Of course, it will branch, might not be where you want it, but plenty time to correct. 8)

if you get any little apples after blooms , pull them off once they are pea size , all the goodness will help the roots , prune the tree back to 3ft of the main trunk , wvery branch no longer then 3 feet and prune back in november to january when the tree is asleep,
