Not really, they'd let in too much light, either hessian or paper sacks are ideal.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

light to tatties makes them go green my friend .
they probably OK to eat, if you cut or peel off the green parts. Potatoes turn green due to prolonged exposure to light. The green color is due to the presence of chlorophyll, a natural plant pigment.
Although chlorophyll is tasteless and harmless, a potentially toxic substance called solanine develops in the same areas as the chlorophyll. In rare cases, solanine can make you sick, causing signs and symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea. However, most of the solanine is in or under the skin. So peeling the potato removes a good amount of it. If you're very concerned, don't eat potatoes that have green areas.

Solanine increases in potatoes as they age, sprout or bruise. To reduce greening in potatoes, store them in a dark, dry, cool place. Don't keep them in the refrigerator. The chilly temperatures will speed up conversion of potato starch to sugar, which makes potatoes less tasty and causes them to darken.

Regarding the horse carrots, I bought a bag from where we get the chook food.  £1.80 for 25kgs.  Used 9lb or so for 2 gallons of wine, then gave some to the chooks, made carrot and coriander soup and froze loads.  Most were very nice carrots, but too big for the supermarkets, or some were a funny shape, but who cares, better than the 69p a kilo ones in Morrisons!!!

Meanwhile, back at the question, about 40 - 50 dependent on size (49 Swift, 44 Majestic).

BTW did an experiment early this year, chitted some supermarket (shame on me) charlotte salad spuds alongside my purchased seed, the seed performed normally producing thick, healthy green shoots but the supermarket spuds produced only tiny, weak, almost black shoots which didn't get to more than 1/4 inch long!

Obviously they had been treated in some way (chemical/radiation/heat ???) to subdue their growth. Needless to say they didn't get planted.
When the weather changes I shall ....

This is making my head spin! Personally I plant my earlies 1" apart & lates 15" - 18" apart.

Fortunately I don't have to work to kg, just numbers. A nursery local to us sells a humungeous number of different varieties, all loose and cheaper than Wilcos. So if I need 27 for a row - I buy 27 -  all hand selected by yours truely!

A chap posted a whole list of potato days on here a couple of months ago. Maybe he'll update us - at least those of us who didn't make a note at the time... or whose brain cells are struggling. It's terrible when you realise you've turned into your parents.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
