Bad Doggie!
« on: April 19, 2008, 13:28 »
Hi All, I'm new here, but you seem like a pretty knowlegable bunch. I've only had my chickens for two weeks - it feels like forever! I have a Border Collie dog, who's supposed to be clever! But she keeps eating the chicken poo! Yuk! Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop her? We have to keep sending her in the house when we let the chickens have the run of the garden. I did hope they would co-exist nicely  :(

I would think the only way is to either pick every bit up as they drop it or use gaffer tape round your doggy's muzzle. Beyond that, they all seem to do it. Our's is particularly fascinated by duck poo at the moment, but he's not too fussy.  :)

Being a collie, could you train her in some way ? Maybe a reward system for not eating it. Doesn't mean she'll stop, but she won't do it while you're looking !

Traing would be fine if she weren't so damned determined!!
We just keep sending her back indoors!
I didn't know others did it - I thought she was just being revolting!!

I think most dogs will do it given the chance. I don't know why but ours likes the cat litter tray too. I'll say no more on that.

No idea if they can come to any harm but I wish you luck in trying to put her off. Wonder if you could lace a few bits with something like mustard ?

She'll prob just sniff out the good stuff though. They're too damn clever for their own good.

Sorry no advice on how to get her to stop just sympathy.
Reg, my mongrel terrier thing, doesn't eat chook poo (about the only poo he doesn't) but I often find him in the rabbit hutch enjoying the bunny currants
Plus he positively relishes troughing about in the front garden (which the cat uses as a toilet  :x )
If he can't find something revolting to eat he'll find something revolting to roll in (dead things, more poo etc)
Sorry that doesn't help but it makes me feel a bit better to get that off my chest.

our dog rolled in a dead pheasant once, it was covered in maggots       Fresh cow shite, all green and runny was a particular fave of his. He once dragged his lead through it. Ew indeed
