Runner Bean roots
« on: April 17, 2008, 14:35 »
Hi,
have sown some runner beans in loo rolls about 5 days ago and although there is nothing showing yet on top I have noticed some have a single white root poking out the bottom.
Now i read somewhere that snipping off the end of this root helps to promote the growth of other roots.
I have tried looking through my books and previous posts on here but cannot find the article so can someone tell me if this is right?

Cheers
Rob
Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty, and so is your head.

My gut feeling is that would be the worst thing to do but we live and learn. You could try doing it on a few and see how it goes.

Mine took a while to come through but they are doing fine now. 4 out of 15 have shoots and the others seem to be moving. I check them every day as I lack patience!!!!

It's dreadful, borne out of the need to check your plants every two hours when at home and worrying about them when you are at work!!!!

Putting them to bed at night making sure they are well fed, watered and warm sounds like young kids again.

They joys of cultivation!! :D

Today i am at work and hubby is at home with my father going to visit,if i could put a padlock on the greenhouse i would!!
i have asked hubby not to let my dad take the tops out of my tomatoes as last year he was being helpfull and topped all the toms at 10in high!!!
I have the seeds covered with newspaper and he takes them off and gets in the greenhouse with the hose pipe!!
I so need to be at home looking after the babys. Its got to the point where the 1st thing i do in the morning and when i get home is go up the patch,on my hands and knees looking down the plastic tunnels and poking in the seed soil.
After reading this i must get my runners planted as i feel left behind.

I also never heard of this, rather the contrary with legumes you want to encourage a long root system, hence root trainers and roll inserts. :?

Ok thanks guys, (and gal's  )
I might do as John suggested and just trim a few to see what happens and if that fails as he also say's it's still early and plenty of time to re-sow.

Hmm, I have just bought 'root trainers' for my beans and the instructions say that a main root will naturally grow out of the bottom of the root trainer and die off thus encouraging greater development of side shoots, so there might be something in the idea of cutting off the bottom of the root yet!
