The joy of compost
« on: April 14, 2008, 12:00 »
When I look back to this time last year when I had just taken on my allotment I never thought in a million years that I would get such satisfaction from a pile of compost!

I have two dalek bins - one at home and one on the allotment. The one on the allotment hasn't really taken off and looks a bit muddy but I decided to get some air into the bin at home and get rid of some of the fruit flies.  When I started to turn the heap it was a revelation and I found it all dark and crumbly and looking like...well like proper compost!

The funny thing is I spent more time trying to perfect the compost on the allotment and the one at home was just filled with grass cuttings, shredded newspaper, autumn leaves and kitchen waste and was never turned.  I can't wait to bag it up and take it down to the allotment!

Anyway sorry for getting all emotional over a heap of rotting plant waste but it's funny how that means more to me than my new plastic greenhouse that I've got to put up!!!

:D  good stuff innit.  Once you love compost you know you've arrived into this strange new world.  You begin to strive for the perfect compost - a pinch of that, a dollop of the other, a soupcon of tea leaves

I'm going to have loads of comfrey this year to use, I'm going to start collecting the kitchen waste from the office and I'll probably gather more seaweed when I'm at the beach so I have high hopes for this year's compost production.

comfrey and nettles make good activators for your compo as does male wee, I used lady water cos my husband won't oblige     Misery guts!
Kitchen waste compost I like cos I find it rots down and you get a quicker result than lotty compost but I started taking kitchen stuff to the plot to speed up performance there.  I make lots of compost  :D

I know, whippets to most people don't look either cute, cuddly, funny, attractive or intelligent. Boxers look comical and besides I can't get my whippet or greyhound to stand still for 10 seconds whilst I put sunglasses on him.......

So I poached the avatar from the internet!!!

Sorry, back to compost. We have piled up all the stuff we have dug, cut, chopped down and generally cleared away over the last couple of years. Now there is a pile of lovely compost - it's like magic.   :)

Looks great when it's cooked.  I put mine through the rotary sieve. Not necessary but it just makes it finer to growing seeds in
