Grubs eating my caulifower
« on: April 12, 2008, 14:41 »
:x First cauli was fine, 2nd and 3rd I have picked has had tiny ´grubs´ in the white stalks of the ´flower´ the stalks had gone a mushy brown.  In one stalk there were 3 or 4 tiny creamy grubs just about 1/4-1/2 inch long with a black dot at the head.  I have had cabbage white on the plants but picked them off as soon as I´ve  spotted them.  I have only 2 cauli left, but want to be prepared for next time.  Any suggestions on what they could be?
Thanks
 Pamela

Not sure but sounds like some kind of caterpillar, possible cabbage whites. Possibly a bit early though.
Remove and squish!!!

Def. not the cabbage white, I know them!! I killed quite a few this afternoon. These grubs were right inside the stem of the ´flower´ you could only see them after I cut the cauli.  From the top it looked perfect.  They had tunnelled into (or out of) the stem :x

I had this once with cabbage root fly Olive, so my bet is a larvae of some fly, might also be local, though. Any chance of a photo?

Sorry, I fed the offending grubs to the hens :(   Apart from we only have dial up internet here, no broadband or ADSL  I´ve spent ages trying to get just one photo to go to photobucket, had to give up in the end.  Dial up internet is c**p :x   One day the Spanish Telefonica might just give us a proper phone line and not a radio phone :(   Still, better than no phone or internet I guess.

I googled cabbage root fly and the grubs (or maggots) look like the ones I gave to the hens.  I´ve purple cabbage growing right by, should I pull them up?  They are just beginning to get hearts.  The piece of garden is going to be grassed over once the cabbage and onions have been pulled up.  I can´t say I noticed the maggots in the root of the cauli-  once I pulled off the leaves I gave that too to the hens.  :(

Well, it might be any other fly, too. If cabbages are hearting I would let them to be.

Not everything does need a treatment, you lose some, is a good policy, unless everything is dying then you want to do something.

If they get pulled up now I can´t eat them, if they stay in they hae a chance of getting bigger or dying and then I still can´t eat them!!  I´ll go with the leave them in chance :D   Cabbage is my favourite vegetable, with runner beans a very close 2nd.
