raised bed crop rotation, help needed.
« on: April 10, 2008, 09:43 »
My hubby has built me 3 1m square raised beds to grow veggies in. Ive put 2 rhubarb plants in the end of 1, then i put garlic in the other end to fill that bed up. Ive filled another with onions, the 3rd has alternate rows of carrots and parsnips. Hubby going to build me a 4th to put pumpkins in but how am i going to be successful at crop rotation with squash and roots? could get hubby to build a 5th but i dont fany growing brassicas. Help.

The crop rotation rules aren't written in stone.

Generally don't grow the same crop in the same place year on year.

You can grow onions and root crops next year where you grow your pumpkin this year, you don't need to grow brassicas. :D

Thank you so much for your replys. This is the first year ive properly grown veg other than herbs and i thought id already made a mess of it. Whenever you read a book it says you must grow this , then this, then this etc.

No, but surely you can find something for that last bed, the more variety you grow the happier all around. Pulses are very good for the soil, any sorts of beans and peas, or maybe sweetcorn, or tomato and chillies or spinach and beetroot, plenty to chose there.

The last bed is in production at the moment, my hubby is a joiner and his list of jobs to do at home is huge so if i see the 4th bed this year i will be very lucky. Men.
