We went to examine our plot on Saturday and had time to plant some garlic and oinions (some kind soul had roughly dug this plot over for us beforehand).

Our splopping plot is 34m x 6m so I guess we had our work cut out for us!

I am planning on planting the following:

Sweetcorn
Butternut Squash
Pumpkins
(oinions & Garlic obviously)
Broad Beans

We have a 8x6 Pent shed being delivered today so apart from the fact we will be on hols last 2 weeks of April we are rarring to go.

If anyone has any general advice / opinions we would love to hear them

Great news vineweevil

main advice is to concentrate on a few beds first rather than trying to do it all at once. Also could be good to look at soil and see what you are dealing with ie clay or sand acid or alkaline soil. This will help you plan what to do to make the beds really fertile. Also look for a source of (preferably rotted) manure to enrich soil and get a compost bin.

Could cover ground with clear plastic to bring on weeds then hoe or cover with black plastic to kill them before you plant/sow. Weather has been silly so you haven't lost anything this season.

Have fun  :D  :D

Keep digging

Thanks for the responses.

I an the queen of planning (the most fun part for me so far!!) so no trouble there, I like the sound of having a beer also...! (Not too many though - I don't mind being drunk in charge of veg but our 2 yr old might not be too keen :-)

HH - we have been reasonably blessed with some of our plot as there used to be chickens there so is prob quite fertile and I am suspecting Acidic?? I will get one of those little testers though so I can see what the rest of the plot is like.

Get yer compost heap going - now is the time for palletting, round the back of shops, especially builders merchants etc. You will find treasure.
Lash a few pallets together and you have the ideal heap, also decking for in front of you shed and the makings of a cold frame.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I wear a good pair of sturdy walking boots at the lotty rather than wellingtons, they are fine even when it is wet and wellingtons can get uncomfortable after a time and when it is hot your feet get real hot and sweaty and start sliding around, not good.  leave you with that last image  :tongue2:
Used to be indecisive, now i'm not so sure...

1st enjoy   :D , work out which way is South you don't want to shade out short plants with tall ones.

Feed the soil, you can't beat good soil structure !!
