Will i be converted?
« on: April 08, 2008, 10:20 »
I know that people say that things your grow yourself always taste better than the bought version, but i wonder whether it's possible to convert me to things i've never liked by growing it myself?  :?

I'm growing 18    broad bean plants (got over enthuisiastic in februaury with nothing else to plant! lol). Now i don't like beans of any sort. I can just about stomach runner beans, french beans etc, but i can't tolerate kidney, butter, haricot etc... even a can of baked beans makes me heave

However, i've never tried broad beans. Do you think it's possible i can be converted?

Also, i'm going to be sowing some peas for the kids and OH, and i've never liked peas. But i'm wondering if eaten straight away when picked will make the difference?  :D

*living in hope*
Trying to live the good life.. getting there slooooowly...

Makes a world of difference. My problem with the peas is getting them back home from the plot!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you eat them while there still small and tender, they are much sweeter as well.  :)

I was brought up on garden grown veg and it was ace! Hence, when i had the money and time to do it myself i jumped straight in! Only things i buy in the summer are avacado's and asparagus!! I agree with DD about the Peas, i rarely get any home to cook as they are lush from the pod, nothing sweeter!

also, lucywil, try tomatoes, easy to grow and so much tastier!

I've never yet got a pea home with me   :D   Sweetcorn is a revelation.  I think aubergines are much better too.  Runner beans taste better I think too.  Broad beans taste better I think with the outer shell slipped off after cooking but maybe that's just me.  Beans can be blitzed into dips don't forget so try that if you don't like them or make them into a yummy casserole or con carne etc

it certainly converted me to beetroot - and now i'm more of an addict!!

previously i'd only had jar stuff in vinegar but growing my own and having it fresh, raw, cooked etc with out the vinegar was a revelation!

i totally agree, even SWMBO was impressed with the taste of the freshly cooked beets, most were consumed before they met the vinegar! :D

I like to add a bay leaf or two to the cooking pan when simmering beets and I roll mine in cider or raspberry vinegar and eat them. Not many make it into jars  :D
