Advise needed - My chicken tries to breed
« on: April 07, 2008, 17:49 »
Please can you help. Due to the size of my chicken-house and the reason I have them as pets, I don't want eggs to hatch. Yes I know, take the eggs out. But one of my hens, just sits in there, if there is an egg or no egg.
Will she stop by herself or what do I do? I stroked her and put her outside, but within a few minutes she is back in again. Please can you help me with your valued advise.

Thanks

She's broody and it will pass of after about 3 weeks -ish

If you can catch them early, as soon as they show signs of becoming broody, yOu can break them of it (sometimes)

I had an Old English Game hen that was broody for 7 weeks. I tried everything but she wouldn't quit being broody
Just thought  i would say as i dont want inexperienced poultry keepers relying on your false information.
I am not being offensive just stating the facts

Aunty never gives false information Kizza

That's why she said -ish, meaning most usually, sometimes less, sometimes more  :!:

Kizza dear, when you have been around as long as Aunty you are allowed to be a little ... erm ... eccentric and to wear purple

Can we help it if your chook has not read the books and decides to live at the very extreeeeem end of normal

Thanks to all of you for your kind help. Silly woman still sits, but she is happy, as I feed her there as well. Yes I got a cock, suppose that is one of the reasons she does it.
I gave my next door neighbour the link to the poultry pages and stored it as a favourite. That is a real compliment to the pages doing that and saying "it's a really good site!"
Thanks again.

Ozzie, hope you don't mind me asking, but if you don't want eggs that could hatch, why have you got a cockerel???

I have to say its a pleasure watching my cockerels with their girls, feeding them and watching over them- and he wont stand any bullying by my old hens specially when introducing new hens or growers. Priscilla my old pekin is very good at sorting out the the young cockerels despite his diminutive size, and I love the sound of them crowing in the morning!

LOL Foxy, we had 2.5 cockerals in with our Amberlink chicks, and I was considering keeping Freddie the biggest one, the smaller one went to a man down the road who had a trio off me! but when Freddie went into my little 'hospital' when he got feather pecked, he lost his place in the flock, so when I put him back they all attacked him and he spent several months on his own, but I needed the shed he was in, so we ate him!!!!
