they look like white caterpillars with black/brown heads, but they are buried in the ground,
i noticed there are quite a few when diggin the plot.
what are they, any ideas?
should i do anything to rid or are they ok.

I saw these mentioned yesterday in the RHS book ive got, in the lawn section, wait aminute...

yes, these are Chafer grubs

any completely brown ones will be leatherjackets

dont they eat grass roots i know what you meen there a bit like those yokes they eat on "i'm a **** get me out of hear" like a big maggot.
what do they hatch into then?

yeah, it was under the lawn section.

Not sure what chafer grubs become, but the leatherjackets become crane flies (daddy bl00dy longlegs) cant stick the damn things

wichita grubs are the 'scrambled egg bugs' on the stupid jungle X-list celeb programs. There australian, supposed to taste like eggs but theyre not that close.

Chafer grubs hatch into little beetles that eat the grass roots.Probably only a problem in lawns

witchitty grubs are good as an appetiser and i would relate the taste more to a prawn when cooked  they need to be crispy on the outside and chewy inside .raw they are sweet and runny . when they pupate they become a ghost moth and the reason the grubs are so prolific is they can carry 40.000 eggs ,enough to feed a gang on the beach a decent barby of bush tucker food, if you get a chance get a hold of a feed of mud crab they go up to 3kg .,boil hard for 15/20 mins sweeter than any british crab ever
