Free compost
« on: March 26, 2008, 08:39 »
Stupid question time... Can I use the free compost from our local tip to grow my toms/chillis/etc? since I now have a trailer I could get loads of free compost and would save a small fortune if I didn't need to buy it from the garden centres etc..

Cheers
SG

I dont see why not, although i guess it depends if anything has already been grown in it as it might contain bugs etc

which is your local tip SG as if they are doing free compost i wouldnt mind some lol
It's Chilli up North.

you turn up and use the spade they provide to bag it or stick it in a trailer.. It is opposite the little hut as you drive in, in a large trailer thingy..

I would never buy compost from our council because I know what I've put in it - all the stuff I don't want in my heap - the mare's tail, dock, nettles etc.  They reckon they turn it round in about six weeks so no way are these going to be killed off and they will be introduced to your plot.

I only live down the road from Sadgit. You can't trust the Haverton Hill compost if Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council take their green waste there BECAUSE we put all our mares tail, wicken and other perennial nasties in the green bin. And have had great satisfaction doing so, because our council does as little as possible to help allotmenteers in our area.  Sorry!
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

Oh great.. thanks for ruining this for me... :(

but surely if I am only using it for pots in the greenhoise/patio it should be ok as it wouldn't be going on the plot?!?!

Don't the council super heat the green waste to turn it around so quickly!  That must kill off all the nasties surely!?!?!?!?

3 x chickens
1 x bunny

Not too sure, Sadgit. It's the mares tail that worries me. There will be spores as well as roots.  And even if you use the compost at home, you wouldn't want to be throwing any used stuff on your garden and introduce the dreaded stuff there too.

We aren't allowed bonfires on our lotties now. Perhaps we should bag it up, dry it and burn it in our chiminea. Sorry to spoil things for you. And there we were, so gleeful that we were getting one over the local council......
