chives vs leeks!....help!
« on: March 13, 2008, 20:36 »
a few weeks ago i lost several trays of seeds in the winds that blew my mini-greenhouse down. I managed to scoop up some of the compost & shove it back in the trays & didnt think any of it would carry on.....I was wrong....i now have fine green shoots coming up & after looking at seedling pics on google am still none the wiser!.....i planted leeks and chives.....how can i tell what is growing?! I had marked the original pots but when I'd scooped it up I hadnt a clue which was which!

This can be very diff at the early stages, but just a little patience , you soon will find out, chive leaves are 'round' (can't think of the right word there, someone will help out) and hollow inside, leeks are flat with sharp edges.

Round is a good description of chive leaves. They're usually a greener colour than leeks, which lean towards blue/green tones. Until they're a bit larger, it's really hard to tell.

There is your answer, you will find as the plants grow leeks will very quickly produce two leaves/stems where as chives stay single.

the chives come straight up as green shoots (albeit weeney) with a little squigley bit on the top. The leeks usually appear as a tiny white shoot, hope that helps...
