« on: March 12, 2008, 22:00 »
:D  hi all im new! we have come from a neat and tidy house with the garden the size of a postage stamp, to a rundown house and large garden and we love it.
we have 3 kids and we are desparate for some chickens! would love ANY hints, tips and advice.
questions i need answering are: is it best to build a house and run, how big (initially 3 chickens and space for more), which are the best chickens to have (good layers and friendly), any other info its late so cant think of anyting else at mo!

Hi chickchick,
Glad you've found the hen house.

If you're on a limited budget then diy can get you a lot further.

But there are some brilliant coops on the market. Best to get as big as you can within reason cos you'll want more.
Run wise, do you want to give them the freedom of your garden or have a large run for them ?
Or maybe a smaller moveable run ?
Make and model of the hens will be personal preference but I think I know which breed you'll be steered towards.
Watch this space.

welcome chickychick

you need a Minimum 1ft square in the coop and minimum 1m square run ...for each chicken.

but the more space the better.

there's usually someone about on here all the time, so dont be afraid of asking the silliest questions, you may get a few stupid replies ( some right nutcases on here) but you'll get all the help, advice and encouragement you could wish for

I think Babe might have used some form of subliminal message there but I couldn't spot it.   8)

We've got Amberlinks from grannieAnnie's flock as have quite a few folks on here now but I know absolutley nothing about any other breed other than what I read.

They all have different characters. Some soft, some nosey, some good layers, etc.

..and then there's the fluffy ones. But the name escapes me.
