Rhubarb

Can you grow rhubarb in a pot, barrel type thing ?
Would it need'forcing' or just let it get on with its life?

I've never had much luck growing it, the slugs get to it before it matures or it just withers away

Just something I might try next year, I have some spare wooden barrel type things I used for tomatos this year
It's all about the journey, not the destination

You can but it will need a lot of feeding and watering.

It is possible though. I know someone with a tiny fully paved back garden that grows rhubarb in a big tub.

I've grown rhubarb in nursery containers.  Your barrel planter would work well.

Rhubarb needs a good supply of nitrogen when it is growing.  Top-dress with manure, if you have it, or you can use fertilizer, either a balanced NPK type, or one which supplies more N and K than P.  When my rhubarb greens up in the spring (or just before I expect it to), I will spread a couple inches of compost over it, since I don't have a trustworthy source of manure nearby.

Like you I dont have access to manure any more (the coalman, milkmand and the rag and bone man have long dgone with their horses

I have no idea what NPK is

I have to get a lot of my ferilizer from ebay, my garden center doesnt have much, it does have a lot of chicken pellets though (a quid a bag)

But I do have compost from my hotbin (which is really warm at the moment and sort of furry at the top)

That should be ready to empty just after Christmas, early January at this rate

Sorry...
N = nitrogen   P= phosphorus    K = potassium

Chicken pellets will supply all of those.  Use more than you would use for tomatoes.  Rhubarb is a heavy feeder.

Great I have a couple of 25kg basgs of it, I’ll mix it in now, then every couple of weeks
Then get onto buying some rhubarb plants
I've now bought two plants, just hope they survive being out side when they arrive
I'll put a large flower ot over them, might protect them from the frost when it arrives
