Ants in fig tree pot
« on: April 20, 2023, 10:32 »
I have a fig tree growing in a large ish pot.  It's 3 years old and I had a handful of figs from it last year.

I notice that there seems to be an ants nest in it.  Should I do anything about that?  If so, what?
There is also one in the strawberry bed.

The ants will climb up and get into the figs so you'll need to fit a grease band to the trunk to stop them. If you want rid, red ants can be killed by sprinkling fine ground polenta or semolina. The workers take it back to the nest, feed it to the queen who is unable to digest it and she dies. The theory is no queen - no nest. Haven't found it to be successful on black ants though so you'd have to use a proprietary product.

If the pot is small enough to fit in a larger bucket or tub, you might be able to drown them out.

The chemical controls I use here would be an off-label use there, so I cant help with that.  Maybe someone closer to home will have an appropriate suggestion.
