Raspberry runners in Asparagus bed
« on: April 14, 2023, 20:40 »
Good evening all.
My raspberries seem to be running amok at present.
The particular concern is their appearance in my asparagus bed though in all honesty they seem to be turning up everywhere! I wonder if any of you have advice on how to restrain them?? Thanks HH
Keep digging

My raspberry row is along one edge of my veg patch, so I made a physical barrier to stop them invading the rest of it - I used some leftover pond liner about 12" wide inserted vertically into the soil (doesn't have to be pond liner, but it does need to be quite tough as the suckers are strong and persistent!)

Only the odd sucker appears on the protected side and is easily pulled or dug out (as for the other, unprotected, side, I now have raspberry plants trying to establish in the hedge having burrowed under the adjacent path! )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

When I established my bed, I sunk a 12” wide piece of plastic soffit board down the side to stop the spread and it worked really well.

This sort of thing https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-PVCu-Soffit-Board---300mm-x-3m/p/187420

Thanks all.
Looks like a physical barrier should have been installed a long time ago!
