HELP.
       Need some advise!!!
Last year I had an enorMOUSE problem with Broad beans and Peas.
Planted seeds in the garden, little green sprouts just appearing and then one morning just the green sprout left, pea seed gone, munched!!!1
Is there any way of treating the seed to stop the little bu***** pinching the seeds? Someone once told me to soak the seeds in parafin!!

It can be birds all the same. A lot of people prefer to sow them indoors in such problem areas instead of the frustration of a hassle.

I can't recommend paraffin myself, being on the side of growing that it's free from and doesn't taste of something else.

Also a guy near me does soak them notoriously, did not get any last year.

When I sow my peas (and beans) I cover them with a cloche of chicken wire and set some mouse traps under them.  Birds and mice aren't getting my peas

I seem to recall my grandad soaked the peas in Jeyes fluid for 24hrs prios to sowing. He said it was to stop mice, and then he netted them until had grown enuff to stop pigeons taking them.
Not so sure about using Jeyes myself, but to quote an oft used phrase 'it werked for him'

a physical barrier is better than soaking peas with paraffin etc. You could soak em and find they come up marvellous only to get eaten by pigeons, so cover is the thing. Applies to everything really  :D

Thanks all,
Dont think its the birds, they are being eaten from under ground.
Oh well back to starting them off in pots.

Dear Corn Dolly,
I was advised to soak my pea seeds in parrafin before planting to stop the mice getting at 'em.
I experimented one year and soaked half of my pea seed in parrafin before planting, the other half I planted straight from the packet.
A lot more of the seeds soaked in parrafin grew than those that wern't soaked. However, out of all the plants, I only managed a handful of pea pods.
If anyone has any 'top tips' on growing peas I would certainly like to hear them.

My broard beans are usually ok,thougha few were rehomed by squirrils last year so I`ll be planting a few in modules just to fill in any gaps.Peas are another matter as they are eaten at all stages of growth so I plant in guttering until nicley established and they do nicley.

If you have pea weevils, avoid early outdoor sowings, leave to late spring/summer. Also could try digging a trench and fill with well rotted manure for them.

I don't know the local bugs at your place much mind.

I had the same problem last year (1st year of growing).

In the end, we grew the peas and broad beans in pots.....just long enough for the beans to decompose and then planted them out.  Did the trick.

Also enclosed our whole garden veg plot in wire fencing and surrounded the fencing with mid-size stones to stop the lttle bleeders from tunnelling under.  This also kept the pesky rabbits out!

That sounds like a good idea with the fencing.

I have the same problems of mice/voles taking the seed before germination. now I plant in trays in greenhouse and then plant out when established.
you do have to sow a fair few to make a worth while row in my garden.

Reading with interest as I've posted before about my own problems with mice and peas. I have no problem getting them to germinate direct sown - I spread my pea seeds with a layer of holly trimmings before covering back with soil - but once the pods form and swell they are stripped almost overnight by mice. The empty pods in piles on the ground. All with rodent teeth marks >:( They take no notice of any traps.

I lose some pods to mice/voles but not too many.
I suppose they have plenty of choice they do nibble some beetroot and potatoes.
its a balance I suppose. when it tips against us we try to do something to stop them.
