Yet more attempts at grafting apples!
« on: October 26, 2022, 13:03 »
Hello everyone,
I've seen vid's of grafting till they come out of my ears and had only one success so far.  I have a question for you, if you saw off a branch in preparation to graft on a "twig" does the sap realise there is no branch there anymore and return back down the tree?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

If you're cutting limbs off to graft onto you should be doing it in winter when the tree is dormant, when the sap rises in the spring it will flow into the branch and either create a union or scab over the cut. What sort of diameter are you thinking of cutting. It may be easier to chip bud or splice the scion in before removing the original limb after the graft has taken, to ensure the sap still flows.
