to do or not to do that is the question [potatoes]
« on: March 01, 2021, 18:01 »
we where all set to put our seed potatoes in our chitting trays today however as the weather has turned back cold  today so  I've put that on hold because we where going to put them in a cold  greenhouse  the potatoes have  started to  shoot all be it small strong shoots but I'm thinking should i risk it or  to do or not to do that is the question

they have been kept in bags in a  frost free place but i don't want to get them frosted or on the other hand spindly shoots by keeping them in the bags the other alternative would be to cover the trays in the greenhouse  overnight? the long term weather forecast doesn't seem  to promising ?

I set mine to chit last week in the spare bedroom under the window as it’s too cold in my unheated greenhouse & can be too warm in the conservatory. Might that be an option?

Why not just leave them in the greenhouse and bring them in when a frost or close to is forecast?

there actually in the conservatory at present ?  although that sounds a good idea to bring them indoors from the cold greenhouse if frost is imminent there will be several  trays to bring in as there are around 50k of seed boxed up

We always chit ours in the cold greenhouse.

We put thick insulation under them and cover with several layers of fleece at night if frost is forecast. Never had a problem: but we are in the Soft South.

Hello I was reading it as 50,000 potatoes not 50kg could understand you not wanting to fetch 50,000 potatoes in every night    jezza

Same for me in Sussex, though the greenhouse loses heat quickly overnight. During the most recent cold spell, my greenhouse got up to near 20C on a sunny day but plunged to as low as -6C overnight. Those kind of big swings are very bad for many crops.
