Broad beans
« on: February 15, 2008, 17:43 »
I have been growing broad beans in pots for the past few weeks. They are now about two inches high and look strong and healthy.
I have planted them out under a poly tunnel on a raised bed.
Should I leave them there or should they be uncovered??

I actually have mine out on the plot, I sowed them about two weeks ago direct. 27th Jan.   (but I'm in the south and the soil is already 7 degrees!)

Im in North Devon. Its very warm and the soil is as warm as the sea (10C) at the moment. We are having a slight frost at the moment. I have covered them up again until I know for sure.

If you have some fleece that would keep the frost off ... they are quite hardy ... Aqualduce are sown to grow through winter!

Mine have been out in the weather since I sowed them and they are fine. I would wait for a frost-free spell and uncover them.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I've got some growing in loo roll tubes. They're about an inch high and went out to the mini greenouse yesterday to try and get them hardened a bit before planting out at the lottie. It's the first time I've done them though, so remains to be seen how successful it'll be, done like this.

You can still sow broadbeans in pots or in the ground for a few weeks yet, they will just be a bit later in cropping.

According to this article by Medwyn Williams, late Feb would seem to be about right for sowing broad beans directly outside.

And according to this article from Gardenaction (useful site by the way), broad beans will germinate in soil as low as 2°C.

I'm going to wait until the current cold snap passes next week before planting mine.

When potting into loo roll tubes do you leave the tube whole or cut it in half?

I leave it whole, so there's plenty of room for the roots to go down.

I put mine in at the end of November, which has always worked fine in the past, and they flower earlier so the flowers have gone before the black fly is out.  But this year - I have 3, some xxx@?/// (probably rabbits, or pigeons) have pulled up the new shoots.

I'm going to put some more in tomorrow - hey ho!
