Asparagus from seed
« on: August 25, 2020, 11:41 »
I sowed some asparagus seeds in pots back during lockdown. They were free from a magazine and it seemed rude not to do anything with them. They've come up nicely, but are still in my shed. Should I over winter them in there or plant out? I already have a load of crowns at the plot, but I love the stuff.

If you leave them in your shed they'll go spindly and weaken so I'd plant them out now so they can get established before winter. I'd suggest planting them deep enough so the growth is below the soil level or the winter cold will get them, but see what others say.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Unless your shed is exceptionally light I'd get them out (but harden them off) asap as Goosegirl says.

Mine are all grown from seed.

I overwintered them in the pots (mine were only around 3") outside then planted them out the following spring when there were signs of new growth so I could be assured they'd survived the winter. Worked for me...

Well I was going to take them to the plot and plant out as suggested, but my wife has overruled me. She's taken them all and repotted them in a larger container which will be left in the shed by the window over winter. She did do most of the watering and cared for them, so we will see how it goes. I have a lovely spot for them too.

You can always buy some roots to plant outdoors.

Since she did most of the care to this point, per your comments, it does make sense to follow her judgement regarding the next step in their care.  Only fair.
