Lupin Plants
« on: June 03, 2020, 11:54 »
Lupin grow as an extensive and invasive plant where I am. I was wondering how best to use them. Are they good for compost only, that sort of thing. Many are in flower just now, but there are still loads that are pre-flower stage, and I could literally fill a truck with them.

The bees seem to like mine but I have truck load too. However we are marked if we have flowers for the wild life on the plots. They can stay till I clear the area to plant it with fruit bushes come the autumn/winter.

Since posting my original message I have watched a YouTube video about digging a little more than the roots in as green manure, they are supposed to be very good for that. The tops only for compost. Since my top soil is quite poor quality, I,m thinking it might be the way to go.

Didn't know about the roots - new one to me. Just hope that they don't grow back from the roots like some plants though (buttercup, dandelion).

I know you can't believe everything on YouTube, but there is quite a bit of info regarding doing this around September. I think the roots rot down and release all the stored nitrogen etc that they hold. Of all the green manure plants the legume family is supposed to be at least equal.
