Broad beans finished
« on: June 02, 2020, 17:00 »
What to do with aquadulce broad bean stems and roots now they are finished. Is it best to compost the stems and break up roots and dig in, or just leave everything to rot down naturally. Then dig over later. Any advice please. Thanks.

I've read that you should cut them off at ground level.  Broad beans fix nitrogen on their roots which should be left in the soil.

(I could be wrong though... :) )

They fix nitrogen in their roots, but then use it to grow the beans and after harvest they have little left in them. May as well pull up the whole plant and compost, then you have space for some more veg.

I will chop 'em off at ground level.  Dig over the plot add BFB and then plant the leeks out into the plot at the end of June.  The old top growth onto a compost bed.
