What is this plant?
« on: April 20, 2020, 21:43 »
I feel a bit silly asking this because I think I planted it last year, but it is not like anything I have planted before. It looks like a brassica, but what type?

I agree it's definitely a member of the brassica family.

Did you plant kale last year?  The leaves are quite large, from what I can see.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Could it be some sort of mustard seed that has been grown for leaves? Or oil seed rape that has somehow found its way onto your plot? The other thing that came to mind possible rocket although I am sure they have a white flower?

I think that is kale gone to seed. My plot neighbour had something almost identical on her plot and that was definitely kale.

I thought I had planted kale but never found any that had survived transplant (or so I thought). I normally plant curly kale, and I had none of that last year. It might be a new variety I decided to try out, not looking like my normal perception of what kale looks like, I completely overlooked it.

Maybe it is worth picking the leaves and steaming them to try it out, before it seeds and dies.

Purple sprouting broccoli I'd say. Or one of it's cousins. We had a lot of broccoli go straight to seed like that this year up here.

I agree, it may be PSB. That is exactly how mine looked when I got back from a walking holiday in Scotland. The bees loved it!

It is definitely not PSB. It never sprouted any purple things. I planted early PSB in a couple of other beds last year which has been producing all month.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
