Compost Bin ... Just leaves or 50-50 Mixture
« on: October 14, 2019, 16:24 »
I have been given two plastic darlek type compost bins for my allotment.

I've already filled one, with a 50:50 mixture of greens & browns*

* This is made up of .. old brassica leaves (no stalks), runner bean plants, with some pods too, sweet corn plants then a bag of shredded paper and a few bags old dried leaves, from the roadside.

Although full for the moments, I'll probably just leave this until at least the spring to see how it goes.

Now I have a second bin which I am keen to use. Not having much green material left, is it worth just filling it with dried leaves ?

I can get hold of seaweed too if that would help. Is that a green or a brown ?

Any ideas for bin 2 ?

Seaweed is a green compost ingredient, so should work well to help the leaves rot down.

Make sure there are no restrictions on collecting seaweed from your proposed location, and that it's not contaminated with oil or tar before adding to the heap.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I always find that leaves rot down with some exposure to the air and need to be damp. Best rotting down I ever had was in an old, open dumpy bag.
