Growing wild strawberries in heavy shade
« on: August 20, 2019, 15:16 »
In November I will be moving some Gooseberries because it is too shady for them.  According to the Bumblebees  conservation trust, wild strawberries are a good plant for bumblebees in shade.  Any ideas on how to grow these?
I have noticed that snowdrops in this area take 3 weeks longer to flower than in full sun, it is that shady.

I'd just grow them as normal and see what happens.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have them in sun and shade and they do fine.  They are really easy from seed as well.  I had a pack of mixed red and white fruiting ones and got loads from it  :)

I have just got a new planter, the sun is just going off it now, will that be ok for the strawberrys ?    I didn't know they would grow in shade  ::)  Mrs Bouquet

Thanks for that.
When did you plant them and what type did you buy from where?

Fine for the wild ones (sometimes sold as woodland strawberries).  Normal ones might not be so happy.

I got a seed sale packet at the garden centre and stuck them straight away, so that would have been around this time of year.  They came up and I overwintered baby plants in the cold greenhouse and planted them out come spring.

As to the brand ... eeerrrr not sure, but a quick Google turned up a mixed pack from Suttons that looks familiar.  I do remember buying a few James Wong seeds in a seed sale.  That is where my Trinidad Perfume peppers came from.   You are supposed to sow in spring, but they worked for me anyway  :)
