New plantings
« on: May 14, 2019, 23:39 »
I have two questions

1. What can be planted in the ground at an allotment in London in rest of May ?

2. I have one side of my garden where the soil gets less sun & soil is relatively poor , although I have put a lot of compost there. What will best grow in such a soil ? Potatos I  put in one part seem to be doing well

Thanks

There's a lot of advice here for sowing in May from this site.

Potatoes are always a good start with a difficult patch as it's the digging over and digging out and earthing up that helps. The other thing you can do (besides adding lots of compost over the years) is to investigate planats that like shade for that area.

I find members of the brassica family do quite well when they have a bit of shade because they don't suddenly start to go to seed overnight. You could try some root crops like beetroot, spring onions, leeks, chives (?) carrots, and possibly salad leaves but it all depends on what you want to grow. Sometimes plants can surprise you when they're put in what seems to be the wrong place, so plant these then try something else you like and see what happens.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well!
