I have just got a new allotment, so I am keen to get going.

Obviously, I need to start planning which vegetables I want.

I fancy some rhubarb so was wondering whether this is a good time to get and plant some crowns. Should I plant straight into the ground, or maybe put them in medium-sized pots first, then plant them out when it is a little warmer.

What varieties are good ?  (I am in Tyne & Wear .. near Newcastle)

Get them planted asap, but don't expect to harvest more than a couple of sticks in the first year

Timperley Early is the first to shoot and the best tasting IMO

Sorry can't help with varities as mine was a free donation from my allotment neighbour.

I've never protected mine I also don't force mine it's bascially left to its own devices - just some manure in autumn and clear of all the leaves when they die back it's been great for the last 10 years.  Good luck & enjoy your plot
