Hello,

I'll be taking delivery of a some bagged manure soon.  What is the best way to apply it? Should I spread it on top or dig it in?

The site is largley dug over already, its all had plants in it this year.

(I've also got some high stregnth chicken manure coming, be interested to know how that is bets applied)

hello only put the manure where its needed eg bean rows potato rows cabbage cauliflower patches don't put on root crop plots carrots parsnip etc it'll cause forked roots   as for the strong chicken manure be careful a local farmer put 200 tons on his fields 3 years ago he's only just getting decent crops again, stack it up away from drains the run off is lethal and the environment agency will have a field day in court jezza

Personally I'd just spread the manure on top of the soil and let the worms dig it in. That will also keep the weeds down a bit.

If it's fresh chicken manure it will have to be composted down first. If you're talking about 6x chicken manure the instructions are on the bag and you only apply small amounts  sprinkled on the surface and raked in.

I was given some horse manure  that had a lot of fresh straw and fresh horse manure so I spread it over one plot and will plough that in to overwinter

my other heap of horse manure that's been standing for about a year I will spread this between the crops in the summer and rotavate I've found rotavating the rotted manure between the rows  keeps the ground open and less weeds and use plenty of manure round my runner beans a good gardener can't beat  a good supply of good manure
