Watering tomatoes
« on: June 25, 2018, 20:02 »
Trying to judge how much to give to my toms , I have them growing in the 'Morrisons'  cut flower buckets with drainage holes about two inches from the bottom.  I have some one litre drink bottles that I have drilled two small holes approx 1-2 mm in the top and screwed back on  and have cut a filling hole in the bottom ( now the top)  I have partially sunk the bottle into the soil.  The plants are about three foot high, Moneymaker variety ,I think.

Thoughts and suggestions most welcome , also hoping for some of the wet stuff ,  according to the weather man very little chance at the moment.  May have to start doing a rain dance!!!
we also rescue rabbits and guinea pigs, grow own veg

Good question Tenhens!!
I have my tomatoes in growbags outside with the fancy watering circles in the bags.
Just delivered a small watering can ( 1 gallon ) to each of the growbags. Probably continue daily till drought finishes on Sunday with luck. Normally use water from my butt however that’s bone dry so I have resorted to mains water.

Keep praying for rain
Cheers HH
Keep digging

I think they usually advise a litre a day, but of course it depends on the weather  ::)
When it is very hot you may have to water the pots twice a day, just go by how happy the plant looks and how dry the compost seems, or how heavy the pot is (if you can lift them..

Aim to keep the compost consistently just moist (stick your finger in if you're not sure.)

Big swings in water availability are the main cause of blossom end rot, some varieties being more susceptible than others.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Just moist is right as they don't need too much or the taste gets diluted.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

That's a very good point Goosey.

Sarah Raven advocates that (I think), and it makes good sense!

We grow in big pots (not the smaller ones I discussed back in the spring), and also some in big Grobags. Both ways they all go in watering trays.

They'll all be different, as I like to have some real garden soil in the pots as well, because the trace elements are what makes a great flavour - well here they do...

Watering therefore is a hose into the tray edge, with a little around the roots. Feeding comes a little later after a good truss has set, which in this weather is not happening as well as it might!

Had to think for a moment what PITA meant , then I twigged!!

Will have to do the ' dance' when the tennis starts!!!!

The mention of Blossom End Rot is a good point and trying to judge how much to give each plant.
One benefit of having the bottom of the bottle pushed into the soil is the potential to reduce evaporation , whether this would make much difference  is open to speculation.
