foot swollen (pictures)
« on: January 31, 2008, 00:15 »
I hatched out 21 quail two days ago. I had to cull one that just walked on it's "knees".   Another one that I culled just had a toe instead of a leg. One I found dead in the incubator.
Some of them look like they have burnt toes. One of the quail's feet are swollen with fluid. Here are some pictures. Can you please help me figure out what's wrong?

-If life gives you lemons find someone who got vodka and have a party
-If it doesn't fit;force it. If it breaks; you needed a new one anyway
-Borrow money from pessimist; they don't expect it back

Tricky. If they were born like that, it could be one of two things. Wrong setting on the incubator. This can lead to deformed feet. Genetic defect with parents but this is unlkely.

If they have been around for a while and then develop these swollen feet it could be a viral infection or possibly an allergic reaction to something that they are coming in contact with.

i wouldn't mess about with the sick ones though. I'd just knock them on the head and concentate on the healthy ones. The reasons for this are that the condition maybe contagious and secondly that the birds, should they live will probably be crippled.
I'm sorry I can't really be of any help.
