I need to clear new plot ... cardboard ?
« on: February 02, 2018, 07:25 »
Ok I think this is a timing issue, I have got access to the plot - it's very wet clay so I don't want to start digging just yet, is it too late (Feb) to put some cardboard down ? ... it probably wont rot quickly enough to start digging in March/April though will it ? I could store the cardboard in the loft ready for next winter ?

Many thanks

I'd have a recce with my spade! I dug a bit of mine yesterday, and, although wet it wasn't sticking together in claggy spadefuls. You'll have to wait if yours does, though.
You can still cover bits with cardboard and make holes through it to plant bigger stuff like squash/courgettes later.

If you're purely only thinking about covering in the short term, you'd be wasting your time, as not much is going to happen until the time you say you're thinking about digging.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Have you considered using the No-dig system. You lay cardboard down and cover with well rotted manure or compost and then plant into that. Each year you simply recover with another inch or so of compost, so you never actually disturb the clay. Have a look at Charles Dowding's website - he is on clay. He's also got a number of videos on You Tube which makes it pretty clear.

Unfortunately that only works if you have a source of free manure, enough to completely cover your plot 4 - 6ins deep - or can afford to buy that much in.  :(
Any less depth of cover will allow weeds to regrow through the mulch.

You could mark out paths, space for shed etc & cut down that way or just do part no dig to get going

That's a thought snowdrop, a big shed for making tea, a couple of large compost heaps, several water butts, a big greenhouse, a patio/seating area where I can drink the tea, then I'll probably need a portaloo, cracked it - just room for a small raised bed for the wife to manage !
