Why seed potatoes?
« on: January 29, 2008, 14:01 »
Hi folks. I got my allotment last year but am only really starting to get things done this year. My question is what are the advantages of using seed potatoes compared to potatoes from the supermarket? I have a load of Maris Bard from Asda that I am chitting, but I intend to get some Javelin and Saxon seeders from wilkos or wherever. Also what kind of fertilizer whould I chuck on before I plant them?

In a word, disease control

Oops that was two words.  They will grow, of course, but I would always advocate buying accredited seed potatoes.

Key reason is to ensure you get disease free stock. Lots of blight problems last year seed spuds tend to be grown at relatively high altitude where there are less disease problems. Normal start is to spread manure or compost on area where you plan for spuds not too late at moment.
