Storing potatoes in builders bag
« on: August 27, 2017, 08:58 »
Hi
I don't have anything more suitable for storing my potatoes than a large builders bag at the moment. The kind used for carrying sand/rubble etc.  What do people think? Bad idea? OK?
Thanks
Steve

'Eggs in one basket' springs to mind . ;)

On the farms they are stored in wooden crates but the barns are temperature and humidity controlled .

You can get some hessian jute sacks from the bay of fleas for not a lot of pennies. Ive just ordered some replacements for the ones I got some 4 years ago. The only reason for them being replacements is due to the daughter having a sack of spuds on occasion and the sack never  returning.
She does have some cracking rag mats though
May the fork be with you

Would not recommend using builders bags. They will just rot in there.
Hessian sacks work well and been using the same ones for a good decade.
You do need to check them still, just in case you have a rogue one.
Mine sit in a small shed from August/September to late spring and early Summer.
I always just before storing my new batch wash the bags on a 40c wash in the washing machine and leave to dry outside. They are still after all these years as good as new.
Why not also freeze a load of the potatoes as mash, roast and chips for use during those summer months when we have no maincrop.

Amazon have loads for sale and work out about £1 a sack in quantity of 5s and 10s.

I got hessian sacks from the lady on our market that sells bird seed, at the time they were free it saw last year she was charging 50p a sack. Might be worth washing before use just because of peanut allergy etc, didn't want anyone to be poorly if they visited etc
A woman's place is in her garden.

Make friends with someone who works in the veg section of your local supermarket  ;)  The plastic bags of potatoes they sell come in bigger strong paper sacks and these only get chucked in the paper and cardboard recycling.  I have been nabbed several times recently while putting out the spuds.

Similarly, if you want net bags for onions, ask nicely.  Some of the stock also comes in these.  You can also try at the garden centre.  A lot of the loose bulbs sold there come in these  :)

Hi.We store our maincrops in plastic crates given to us by our local vegetable store. They are about 2 ftx1ft4inches by about the same deep. They are strong enough for 2 three gallon bucketfulls. The sides are strong plastic "mesh" and I stack two on top of each other and put them in the dark.Never had any rots yet,and we use out of them until about March. Can recommend them better than hessians too.   Regards John.
