What to follow First Early Spuds?
« on: January 28, 2008, 17:20 »
I am planning some first earlies for the first time and have just started chitting some Duke of Yorks.

The question is, what do I follow them with assuming that I am lifting them in late June/July.

Has anyone got any suggestions for what to plant in this bed?  I dont want to grow later spuds - too many blight problems.
Try to be organic ...sort of ...most of the time ...

Winter brassicas, leeks, early peas.
If it wasn't for chemicals we'd be organic.

Leeks is my usual follow on peas ok too. With luck you could get a crop of mange tout peas ready to eat before the weather changes.

Cheers HH

Anything, really, that is ready to roam in June time, except for tomatoes and peppers maybe, as they are closely related, and people will argue on this no doubt, but for the one season it does not actually matter much.

If not short of space, can put green manure in and clear for next autumn/spring planting.

Probably all of the above given that you will probably have a sizable area in potatoes.  I could add salad stuff and coriander to the list.  See here for coriander planting : http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=12010

Garlic would follow from Sept onwards

Tomatoes and peppers
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
